Part 1: The Personal Spark
The frustration is real. Despite countless articles written on the subject, nothing ever changes. Why must women put up with this bullshit on a daily basis?
I remember the day I’d finally had enough. I was working as an Account Manager for a Fortune 500 company. After hanging up the phone from a call, I loudly snapped.
“God, I am just so tired of the terms of endearment! I bet not one of those MEN calls Bill ‘Honey, Darlin’, Dear, or Sweetie!’”
Shocked, Bill whipped his head around.
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yes! Absolutely!”
“Every single day.”
“All damn day long!”

Suddenly, the department was abuzz. Women relieved that someone finally had the audacity to say it out loud! Most women go about their day internally fuming, never actually voicing their concerns. Not me. If you want to see change, you have to speak up.
Approximately two months after that workplace revelation, management dropped a bombshell: All of our conversations would now be recorded. At the time, we all grumbled about them listening in. We knew our calls weren’t always strictly business-related; when you talk to the same clients every week, conversations naturally stray.
Not one person connected the dots to my outburst. In hindsight, though, it made perfect sense. The “terms of endearment” stopped for two reasons: because I spoke up, and because management started recording our calls. They realized they needed to know exactly which sales reps were using that antiquated language so they could finally target the problem.
Part 2: The Bigger Picture
This brings us to a broader, more exhausting reality: the world claims to have changed, but true equality remains out of reach because society refuses to stop viewing a woman’s value through her gender.
While casual terms of endearment were once brushed off as harmless, outdated office etiquette, they stem from a much deeper, systemic disease. Ultimately, the casual use of pet names in a cubicle and the mistreatment of women on the global stage come from the exact same root: a stubborn refusal to see women as purely professional entities.
Part 3: The Global Stage
We see this systemic failure most vividly at the absolute highest levels of global power. Even when a female leader reaches the very top, the regressive playbook remains the same.
Look at the photographs of our world leaders. In a meeting between a powerful male leader and his female counterpart, the body language tells the entire story. His eyes are not on her eyes. From an objective perspective, the married world leader misconstrues her cordiality as personal interest. Captured through the camera lens, his wandering eye reveals a distinct lack of professionalism toward his female peer.
He relies on those blurred lines, assuming her collaborative friendliness is an invitation. He operates on the world stage, yet he still views a global peer through the lens of potential conquest.
But a distinct, telling pattern emerges. The relationship dynamic alters instantly when she pivots from friendly rapport to exhibiting pure professional prowess. The moment she demands to be treated as an equal, his illusions shatter, the dynamic abruptly shifts, and his ego cannot handle it.
It proves that no matter how high a woman climbs, the system is still rigged to see her gender before her intellect.
