In the Beginning

Remember, when as a sophomore in high school, your folks started to inquire what you envisioned yourself doing for the rest of your life?
I vividly remember the day my mother asked. My response? “A Writer.”
I was met with immediate opposition—the proverbial, “There’s no money in writing.” That was all she ever saw: dollar signs. Her mindset was always fixed on how to make the most amount of money in the shortest period of time.
A few weeks passed before she came back and said, “Well, you have to do something, so I’ve decided to send you to Secretarial School.”
I know she had hoped I’d say a Doctor or a Lawyer, though she was truly living in a dream world if she thought I could pull either of those professions out of my little bunny hat with the grades I was bringing home.
In the end, I can attest to the fact there was no money in being a Secretary either—unless, of course, you were the top-gun Personal Assistant to the President of the Company, which I would never be. And why? Because I didn’t want to be a secretary. I wanted to be a Writer.
Editor’s Note: I actually started a blog when they were still relatively new. I had planned to write under my own name, but when I looked myself up online, there she was: the woman my Mother could be proud of—a Doctor. I found it rather ironic she was also writing books.
